Kilwa now shared the revenues of its extensive tax system with Mombasa (da Silva Rego and Baxter v.l, 1963: 397-8). At this period, Mombasa had surpassed Kilwa in size and possibly wealth, with its population close to 10,000, while Kilwa reportedly contained only 4,000 inhabitants (da Silva Rego and Baxter v.l , 1963: 535, 537)."
